When things start heating up in the Old Pueblo, people escape and businesses slow down a bit. It is a way of life here in the desert community of Tucson. So, who would even consider starting up a business in the middle of the summer? Anna Marie Schelling and Carol Peabody, the owner/partners of Hacienda D’ Mexico, that’s who! Believe it or not, in August of 1999, they opened a delightful furniture store featuring quality colonial rustic Mexican style furniture and home accessories designed and manufactured from their very own factory in Mexico. If that isn’t unbelievable enough, until this year, they have never even advertised! And, the only sale they ever have is their once a year annual customer appreciate anniversary sale in August. And yet, against all odds here they are surviving and thriving in spite of, dare I say it, a tough economy.
Their success is no surprise with a winning approach such as, “We’re not sales people. We just want people to come in and wander around, visit and feel welcome.” One only has to pop in for a tour of their fun and fabulous showroom to be intrigued and hooked. While you’re roaming around watch them as they welcome other visitors as if they had invited them to their home for dinner. In fact, they even encourage customers to invite their four legged best buddies along for a shopping extravaganza! They will even have a fresh bowl of cool water to quench your pup’s thirst on a hot summer’s day.
Anna Marie and Carol have no employees and believe in a personal, hands-on approach to serving their customers rather than selling them. It is apparent when you walk into their store that they love what they do and are committed to making you feel welcome. “Our policy is, whatever the customer says, we do. Whatever makes him or her happy, we will agree on it because that’s more important than anything else.” No matter what the need they will find a way to give their clients what they seek and desire because for them, “There are no problems just solutions.”
They have a unique advantage since they’re furniture is, “designed and manufactured at their plant in Mexico and the US. It’s a family business. My brother has the designers and manufacturers and he has a store in Scottsdale.” Most of all they want us to love the way they love their customers because for them that is what best distinguishes them from any other furniture store in Tucson.
If you’d like to visit them on a hot summer day to cool off and explore their treasure trove of one of a kind pieces, they are located at 4380 East Grant Road. You can reach them at 520-795-4399 or visit their booth at www.mylocalhomeshow.com . Don’t forget to stop in for their 20% sale in August!
